Verifying that sperm have been successfully excluded from the ejaculate after vasectomy

Method Name

The primary method for PVAS testing is manual via Light Microscopy.

 

If a sperm count is reflexed, the primary method remains Light Microscopy by hemocytometer. In some instances, the sperm count may be assessed via automation utilizing the SQA-Vision (SQA) analyzer located at the NorDx Scarborough Campus. The MES SQA-Vision is a high-performance analytical medical device that combines optoelectronics, computer algorithms, and video microscopy for analysis.

Reference Values

The success of a vasectomy is assessed by the presence of <100,000 non-motile sperm/mL at six months after vasectomy.

Report information will include the presence or absence of sperm cells and, if present, their concentration and motility status.

Specimen Collection and Handling

  1. Forward the total ejaculate at ambient temperature (68 – 90°F or 20 – 32°C).
  2. To ensure the most viable semen specimen, semen collections are to be done at the designated NorDx locations listed above only.
  3. Hours for collection of semen specimens are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  4. Private and clean spaces, as well as collection instructions are available to patients who present to produce a semen specimen.
  5. Collection instructions and container will be provided at the designated locations.
  6. Post Vasectomy Semen Collection Instructions Form must accompany the specimen.
