Specimen Collection and Handling
1. Collect whole blood sample in a dark green top lithium heparin tube.
2. Forward promptly to the lab for analysis.
The preferred specimen volume is greater than 3.0 mL in a 4.0 mL dark green tube (minimum 1.5 mL) or greater than 1.5 mL in a lithium heparin 2.0 mL tube (minimum 1.0 mL).
Pediatric sample specimen minimum: 0.4 mL in a dark green lithium heparin microtainer.

Refrigerated: 4 Hours
Note: Analyze whole blood ASAP. Analysis must be performed within 2 hours of collection. Whole blood samples for ionized calcium analysis can be stored at 0-4°C or in a slurry of ice for a maximum of 4 hours if sample has remained capped.
