Culture Transport Media – Use small tip swab only if required (eye, nasopharynx, male urethra). A better sample is obtained with a larger swab. Usual sites: rectal or stool
Specimen Collection and Handling
1. Aseptically collect specimen from affected area.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, date and time of collection, collector’s initials and specimen source.
TO PROCESS: Send at ambient temperature. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Specimen source is required on request form for processing. To detect other pathogens, also order a bacterial culture appropriate for the specimen source.
