Reference Values
Therapeutic concentration: 4.0-12.0 ug/mL
Toxic concentration: >15.0 ug/mL
Carbamazepine levels should be drawn as a trough (2 hours prior to the next scheduled dose). Oral absorption is slow, peak levels occur 8 to 65 hours after ingestion of the first dose; the half-life ranges from 8 to 60 hours, therefore, steady-state is achieved in 2 to 5 days. Serum levels are particularly important during the first few weeks of therapy when autoinduction is occurring.
