Specimen Collection and Handling
Collect specimen using two swabs as follows:
1. Place gentle pressure on tongue with tongue depressor.
2. Extend two sterile swabs between the tonsillar pillars and behind the uvula.
3. Sweep the swabs back and forth across the posterior pharynx, tonsillar areas and any inflamed or exudative areas.
4. Place both swabs in a single transport tube, if part of a dual swab kit, or in two separate transport tubes.
5. Two identical STRSC labels print to allow for the labelling of separate swab transport tubes.
- If a dual swab kit or a single swab is collected, label the single transport tube and discard the second printed label.
- If two separate swab transport tubes are collected, label both and band together. Transport to lab together.
6. If a computer-generated specimen label is unavailable, label the tube with the patient’s name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, date and time of collection, collector’s initials and specimen source.
7. Send specimen at ambient temperature. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
