Clinical Significance
Specific gravity is the ratio of the mass of a unit volume of solution to the mass of an equal volume of distilled water under standard conditions. It is a direct, but not proportional, function of the number of particles in the urine. Since the work done by the kidney in eliminating substances is directly related to the number of particles present, specific gravity is one measure of renal function.
