PREMATURE INFANTS:

1 – 7 days: 1100 – 16,700 ng/dL/hr

FULL-TERM INFANTS:

1 – 7 days: 200 – 3500 ng/dL/hr Plasma renin activity in newborns is elevated and highly variable. Premature infants generally exhibit substantially higher values ranging from 1100 – 16,700 ng/dL/hr.

CHILDREN*:

31 days – 11 months: 235 – 3700 ng/dL/hr

12 months – 2 years: 171 – 1115 ng/dL/hr

3 – 4 years: 100 – 650 ng/dL/hr

5 – 9 years: 50 – 585 ng/dL/hr

10 – 14 years: 50 – 330 ng/dL/hr

*Normal Sodium Diet, Supine Posture. Dietary sodium levels during this period prior to testing can affect Renin levels. Sodium restriction tends to cause an increase in renin activity, while supplementation can result in lower values.

Normal studies of plasma renin activity in young children and adolescents are incomplete.

Specimen Collection and Handling

1. Mix sample gently by inversion.

2. Centrifuge immediately after collection.

3. Separate and freeze plasma immediately and send frozen, making note whether recumbent or upright sample.
