Useful For
Presumptive detection and differentiation of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA).
Susceptibility testing is not performed.
Suggested for pre-surgical screening.
Note: If only a screen for MRSA is desired, refer to Culture, Bacteria, MRSA Screen.

Specimen Type
Swab from Affected Area. Usual sites include: Nares, Axilla, or Groin.

Note: A better sample is obtained with a larger swab.
Specimen Collection and Handling
1. Use a swab to collect specimen from nares, groin or other site.
2. Submit swab in bacterial culture transport medium.
3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, date and time of collection, collector’s initials and specimen source.
4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature.
5. Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
6. If detection other pathogens or antibiotic susceptibility testing is desired, order a bacterial culture appropriate for the specimen source.
7. A routine culture with susceptibility test will detect a wide variety of pathogens, including MRSA.
