Useful For
Lipoprotein phenotyping by separation of lipoproteins into patterns by electrophoresis and subsequent Frederickson classification; cholesterol; cholesterol, HDL; cholesterol, LDL (calculated); cholesterol, VLDL (calculated); triglycerides
Evaluate hyperlipidemia to determine abnormal lipoprotein distribution and concentration in the serum.
Method Name
Electrophoretic with Frederickson phenotyping criteria
Reference Values
Normal pattern
Specimen Type
Serum
Preferred Container
Serum Separator Tube (SST)
Preferred Volume
Serum: 2 mL (Serum Separator Tube (SST))
Minimum Volume
Serum: 1 mL (Serum Separator Tube (SST))
Specimen Collection and Handling
Spin specimen, separate from clot within 45 minutes of collection and send refrigerated.
Patient should be on stable diet ideally for two to three weeks prior to collection of blood, and should fast for 12 to 14 hours before collection of the specimen.
Lipid panels are best avoided following acute myocardial infarct, for up to three months, although cholesterol can be measured in the first 24 hours.
