Specimen Type
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Preferred Container
Screw-Capped Sterile Vial – Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false negative results.
Preferred Volume
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF): 1 mL (Screw-Capped Sterile Vial)
Minimum Volume
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF): 0.5 mL (Screw-Capped Sterile Vial)
Specimen Collection and Handling
Store CSF specimen refrigerated and send in a screw-capped sterile vial.
1. Specimens grossly contaminated with blood may inhibit the PCR and produce false negative results.
2. The high sensitivity of amplification by PCR requires the specimen to be processed in an environment in which contamination of the specimen by HSV DNA is not likely.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at refrigerated temperature.
4. SPECIMEN SOURCE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.
