Additional Codes

Software Test Code
Label Text FLCUL
EPIC LAB269

Performing Laboratory

NorDx Laboratories

Useful For

Isolating bacteria from normally sterile body fluids.  Significant isolates reflex to organism identification and antibiotic susceptibility test (includes Gram Stain). Additional charges apply.

Method Name

Conventional Culture

Reference Values

No growth

Days and Times Test Performed

Monday through Sunday

Report Available

Positives are reported when detected

Specimen Type

Body Fluid

Preferred Container

Screw-Capped Sterile Vial – If fluid is available, please send liquid specimen.

Anaerobic swab permitted for synovial fluid collection only. Swab specimens typically do not provide sufficient material for ideal recovery of organisms in sterile body fluids.

Preferred Volume

Body Fluid: 10 mL (Screw-Capped Sterile Vial)

Minimum Volume

Body Fluid: 0.5 mL (Screw-Capped Sterile Vial)

Specimen Collection and Handling

1. Aseptically collect 10 mL of fluid.

2. Submit specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.

3. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth or medical record number, date and time of collection, collector’s initials and specimen source.

4. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Specimen Stability Information

Specimen Type: Body Fluid

Room Temp: 24 Hours

Note: DESIRED STABILITY 24 HOURS; MAX STABILITY 7 DAYS. Organism recovery/detection may decrease significantly after desirable limit.
