  • This test code is only to be ordered by/for providers at MaineHealth Outpatient practices.
  • Dermatology specimen sources such as eye conjunctiva, oral mucosa such as tongue or buccal mucosa, vulva, vagina, anus, or any large excision with attached lymph nodes should be ordered as a SCC test code "HIST", Surgical Pathology Tissue Specimen.
  • For any MaineHealth inpatient skin specimen(s) including those collected at Scarborough Surgery Center (OR) for any outpatient clients, including but not limited to Intermed, P.A., the SCC test code "HIST", Surgical Pathology Tissue Specimen, should be ordered.

Specimen Collection and Handling

  • Small biopsies to be placed immediately in 10% buffered formalin
  • All specimens are sent to the Histology department as soon as convenient to expedite the tissue processing with leads to the microscopic evaluation.
  • All specimen containers must be labeled with 2 unique patient identifiers to include the patient’s first/last name, date of birth or unique medical record number.
  • All specimen containers must be labeled with the date of collection, specimen source for each container and requesting clinician.
  • The patient requisition or electronic order must include the patient’s first/last name, date of birth, ward/clinic, hospital MRN, gender, date of collection, specimen source for all containers, requesting clinician, clinical history and pre-operative/post – operative diagnosis.

Histologic Diagnosis

  • Testing Includes: Gross examination, microscopic examination, and diagnosis by MMP Dermatopathology.
  • May include IHC and special stain reflext testing, as deemed clinically necessary.
