Heavy smokers : 5.0 – 9.0% saturation

Smokers: 1.5 – 5.0% saturation

Nonsmokers : Less than 1.5% saturation

Dark Green Top Tube (Lithium Heparin)

Preferred Volume

Whole Blood: (Dark Green Top Tube (Lithium Heparin)) – Tube must be full at time of collection.

Specimen Collection and Handling

1. Draw blood in a dark green-top Lithium Heparin tube (Sodium Heparin is acceptable).

2. Send the entire tube of whole blood.

3. Avoid exposure of specimen to atmosphere. DO NOT OPEN TUBE.

Maine Medical Center Collection:

Draw blood in either a dark green-top Lithium Heparin tube (Sodium Heparin is acceptable) OR a heparinized syringe. DO NOT OPEN TUBE.

Blood gas syringe Test can be performed as an add-on only if specimen has remained tightly stoppered.
