Specimen Collection and Handling

Send refrigerated.

Formed stool specimens are not acceptable for testing unless patient symptoms indicate ileus.

Contact Microbiology (396-7895) to determine if testing is appropriate.

Note: Raw stool stable 5 days refrigerated at 2-8° C, 24hrs at room temp or indefinitely at ≤ -20° C. Stool in Cary-Blair-based transport medium (Para-pak® C&S) stable refrigerated at 2-8° C or indefinitely at ≤ -20° C.

Note: Confirmation EIA testing has a stability of 3 days refrigerated at 2-8°C, 24 hrs at room temp or indefinitely at ≤ -20 °C until tested. If confirmation testing is indicated, and the specimen exceeds these stability requirements, recollection may be required.
