Specimen Collection and Handling

Collect as follows:

1. Add nine parts blood to one part buffered 0.105M (3.2 %) sodium citrate and mix gently 3 to 4 times.

2. Specimen must be delivered IMMEDIATELY to the laboratory for testing.

3. Do NOT centrifuge.

4. Send at ambient temperature.

5. Blood should not be taken from heparinized indwelling catheters or other anticoagulated lines without thoroughly flushing the line.
Such specimens must have a minimum of 6 times the dead volume of the line cleared with blood prior to specimen collection.

Platelet factor 4 is released during the centrifugation and suspension processes.
This release by the platelets can result in a false decrease in the ACT due to the neutralization of heparin by Platelet factor 4.
